a modern painter with deep roots.

dublin artist, bart o’reilly, is a painter in the tradition of irish legends louis le brocquy and sean scully. here he talks about his new show for solas nua, old lines from the luminous state.
“i began this series by making a video sourced in a barn built by my wife’s irish ancestors. the barn has been instrumental in my thinking, since the objects collected there give hints about a past life and the people who used them. they speak to me about the transient state of people and their artifacts. i am drawn to a limbo like condition where a person or object moves through a space leaving a mark but never quite having a sense of belonging. the objects as they are arranged in the drawing are not permanent but rather in a state of transition. the drawings and perhaps the video represent this desire to hold on to something even though it is only temporary. i find a poetry in the fact that the more decayed the artifact is the stronger the mark it leaves behind in the drawing.”
