nevan lahart
ireland’s serious joker.
conceptual artist, nevan lahart, is dangerously funny. here he talks
about how he makes art.

My essential work practice involves me playing around with the few ideas I have in my head at any given time. The content of those ideas run the gauntlet from socio-political observations, art and film history, institutional critiques, through to my own interpretations of life and death as I find it. My work is usually imbued with a sense of the comic tragedy and is peppered with grey humour. The material form of the work varies and is dictated by the content and has in the past incorporated painting, sculpture, installation, video, animation and performance.
The role of play in my practice is quite important to me. My practice has developed into a freestyle production with fast made decisions and speedily made ideas. I am essentially more interested in the content and energy than finish. I believe work should be generous to the viewer by its nature. I see art as a shopping centre, where everyone can enter and get something from the ground floor that they like or can relate to. There should also be the possibility of going up a level or 2 for the specialist.
For the Washington expedition my plan is to get there, spend some time and get a feel for the place and make work with and about what I find and observe. The finished work due to the nature of my practice could be quite disposable, ephemeral and maybe somewhat camouflaged. It could take the form of actions, performances, sculptures, paintings or collaborations with locals or local groups. This is the area I roam for my work practice and I feel most comfortable making work under pressure.

solas nua

sculptor and conceptual artist nevan lahart makes social commentary in the form of gallery installations and public interventions. in march 2010 he will take up a residency with solas nua in washington dc, creating a piece of public art in response to his experience in the city. often humourous and always truthful, lahart has a unique gift to strip away the hypocrisy of ordered society and reveal the baser instincts that lie below within each of us.
