Q&A with director Dónal Foreman, moderated by visual artist Jackie Hoysted.
In Irish filmmaker Dónal Foreman's (THE IMAGE YOU MISSED) surprising blend of road movie, psychodrama and fantasy, a grieving American filmmaker (Dale Dickey, A LOVE SONG, WINTER'S BONE) and her Irish assistant (Judith Roddy, DERRY GIRLS) tour the west of Ireland, researching a film about Granuaile, the legendary 16th-century rebel and "pirate queen." The two women develop an uneasy intimacy as they journey toward a remote Atlantic island, as boundaries begin to blur between past and present, myth and history, dream and reality. THE CRY OF GRANUAILE is a genre-defying treat, shot on 16mm film, with Romanian cinematographer Diana Vidrascu picking out extraordinary images that simultaneously defy and appease the tourist's view of Ireland. (Note adapted from Alice Productions.) Winner, Best Performance (Judith Roddy), 2022 Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema. Official Selection, 2022 Belfast Film Festival.
