Solas Nua is proud to partner with RTÉ Drama on One to present Northern Lights, a radio drama by Stephen Jones.

The radio play stars Stephen Jones and Seána Kerslake, and was directed by Karl Shiels, with Production Supervision and Dramaturgy by Gorretti Slavin and Sound Supervision by Mark Dwyer. The Series Producer of RTÉ Drama On One is Kevin Reynolds.

A post-show discussion will feature playwright/actor Stephen Jones and actor Seána Kerslake.

Northern Lights was an Irish Times 'Best New Play' Nominee and Stephen's play From Eden was featured in our play reading series last year. Stephen Jones
Stephen is from Tallaght and is a graduate of UCD.
As an Actor, notable theatre credits include: Howie The Rookie (Glass Mask), Last Orders at the Dockside (Abbey Theatre), Brothers of the Brush (Verdant), Class (Inis Theatre/Abbey Theatre – Edinburgh Fringe First winner 2018), Hue and Cry (Awake & Sing), Northern Lights (Awake & Sing), Ulysses (Abbey Theatre), DruidMurphy: Plays by Tom Murphy (Druid Theatre Company), Hue And Cry (Awake & Sing), Maz & Bricks (Fishamble), Dubliners (Corn Exchange) at the Dublin Theatre Festival, Alone it Stands (Verdant), Stones in his Pockets (Gaiety Theatre/UK Tour), Are you there Garth? It’s me Margaret (Gaiety Theatre), This Lime Tree Bower (Eoin Kilkenny Productions), Danny and Chantelle: Still here (Red Bear), From Eden (Awake & Sing), the role of Thomas MacDonagh in Signatories (Verdant) which played at Kilmainham Gaol during the 1916 centenary celebrations before moving to the Olympia Theatre, Dublin and the leading role of Keano in the hit comedy musical I Keano, also at the Olympia Theatre.

Film credits include: Dublin Oldschool, Between the Canals, King of the Travellers, Undergrowth, Scratch and I Bet.

Television credits include: Love/Hate, KIN, Red Election, Nowhere Fast, Amber, Pheasant Island, Damo & Ivor, Ripper Street, Into the Badlands, The Bloody Irish, The Queen vs Patrick O’Donnell and Red Rock in the leading role of gangster Francis ‘Laser’ Byrne.

Stephen is also a playwright. His play From Eden was the winner of the Stewart Parker Trust/BBC Northern Ireland Radio Drama Award. His play Northern Lights was nominated for ‘Best New Play’ at the Irish Times Theatre Awards and the Irish Writers Guild ‘Zebbie’ Awards. He was the 2020 recipient of the prestigious Phelim Donlon Playwright bursary. His play A Certain Romance was a ‘Druid Debut’ with Druid Theatre Company at the Galway Arts Festival in 2008.

Both From Eden and Northern Lights have been adapted for radio by RTÉ Drama on One and have won awards at international festivals such as the New York Radio Festival and the Prix Italia, Capri.

Stephen is currently working with Deadpan Pictures on a television adaptation of Northern Lights.

Seána Kerslake
Seána can currently be seen on Netflix as Sarah, the leading role in the critically acclaimed THE HOLE IN THE GROUND directed by Lee Cronin after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. 

She has just finished shooting the role of Grace Ahern for the upcoming six-part drama series SMOTHER which is currently in post-production. 

Other Television credits include Aisling in BBC3/RTE’s two seasons of Can’t Cope Won’t Cope directed by the amazingly talented Cathy Brady and Imogen Murphy.

Recent film credits include My Salinger Year directed by Philippe Falardeau and starring opposite Emmy nominee Margaret Qualley. 

It premiered as the opening film of the 2020 Berlin film festival.

Other film credits include Una in We Ourselves directed by Paul Mercier, Gemma in Dublin Oldschool directed by Dave Tynan, 

A Date for Mad Mary directed by Darren Thornton and Dollhouse directed by Kirsten Sheridan.

While working extensively on screen Seána has many theatre credits including the lead role of Cat in Mood Music at The Old Vic theatre London, opposite Ben Chaplin and directed by BATA winner Roger Michell.

Áine in Stephen Jones’ Northern Lights and Eva in From Eden both directed by Karl Shiels for Theatre Upstairs.

Treasa opposite Seán McGinley in KING OF THE CASTLE with Druid Theatre Co. directed by Tony Award-winning director Garry Hynes.

In 2017 she was named one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow.

In 2016 Seána won the prestigious Bingham Ray New Talent Award at the Galway Film Fleadh for her role in A Date For Mad Mary.

Seána has been IFTA nominated 5 times. 

Seána is currently shooting an episode of the Amazon original series Modern Love opposite Kit Harrington and Ballywalter a feature film written by Stacey Gregg and directed by Prasanna Puwanarajah.
