In Eamonn ó Cualáin's fascinating documentary, Irish hurling legend Ger Loughnane reveals the little-known origin story behind the Canadian obsession that is ice hockey. Loughnane discovers how the sport evolved into 'ice hurling' and ultimately morphed into Canada's national sport. Beyond giving new Irish immigrants a perennial connection to their cultural roots, the sport also established them in Canadian society, leading to success beyond the rink, in business, employment and politics. From the early amateur era to the birth of professionalism and the creation of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917, Irish teams and players of Irish descent have been revered for their skill and tenacity on the ice.
